What heavy-sleeper mode changes

  • Siren sound at 100% volume, without the quiet start. Change it to Loud buzzer or Rooster in Settings if you prefer.
  • Solve three sums to stop. Snoozing is still one tap, but stopping the alarm needs a working brain, the trick that made phone apps like Alarmy famous and that no other website offers.
  • Sunrise light for the 20 minutes before the alarm: the whole screen brightens from black through amber to white, so you are half awake before the sound starts.
  • Vibration on phones, a notification, and the screen kept awake all night.

Set-up that actually works for heavy sleepers

Volume is the first failure point: press Test sound once with the volume you will sleep at. Put the device across the room so you have to stand up, and use a laptop or tablet rather than a phone if you can, because their speakers are louder and the screen works as a wake-up light. Set the alarm at a sleep-cycle boundary using the bedtimes on the sleep calculator; waking in light sleep is far easier than waking in deep sleep, whatever the volume.

If you consistently sleep through alarms, the cause is usually not the alarm but short sleep. The bedtime table on every alarm page shows what five or six full cycles require for your wake-up time.

Questions

Will the alarm ring if I close the tab or the laptop?

No. No website can ring after the browser is closed or the computer sleeps. Keep this tab open, plug in, and the clock keeps the screen awake for you. The Ready-to-ring check under the clock shows what is set up correctly.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes on Android while the tab is open (behind other tabs is fine). On iPhone the page must stay in the foreground because Safari does not let web pages play sound from the background. Add it to the Home Screen for a full-screen bedside clock.

Is it loud enough for heavy sleepers?

Pick Loud buzzer or Siren, set the volume slider to full, and switch on the sums-to-stop option in Settings so the alarm cannot be dismissed half asleep. The sunrise light brightens the screen before the alarm too.

Can I use my own sound?

Yes. In Settings, choose an MP3, WAV or OGG file. It is stored in this browser only and never uploaded.

What do the sleep sounds do?

Rain, brown noise, white noise, fan and ocean are generated in the browser and play until the alarm, then fade out as it rings. They keep the tab active through the night.

Does it need an internet connection?

Only to load the page the first time. Alarms, sounds, the sleep calculator and the sunrise math all run on your device, and the page works offline once it has been opened.

Is anything stored or sent?

Alarms and settings are saved in your browser's local storage. Nothing is sent to a server, and there is no account.

How loud is it?

As loud as your device speaker allows. The siren and buzzer are tuned to the frequencies laptop and phone speakers reproduce loudest. Connect a Bluetooth speaker for more.

What if I cannot solve the sums half asleep?

That is the point. Snooze is always available with one tap; only Stop needs the answers. Switch to the typed-sentence option in Settings if you prefer.
